About Vicki & Al
Al and Vicki Kopacka are professional musicians who have decided to branch out and create a unique and interesting shop. Unlike most stores, What in the World features unique hand-crafted items from around the world. Rather than focusing on massive profits, as most chain stores do, What in the World carries only items imported by non-profit free-trade organizations; or items made by individuals whom Al and Vicki personally buy from. You can be sure that all the wonderful things in our store are not the result of exploitation, child labor, or mass profiteering. Not only can you buy something unique and wonderful for a good price; but you can feel good that your purchase is supporting individuals and families both here in America and all over the world.
Our Story
In 2004 we visited a Ten Thousand Villages store in New Haven, Conn and decided that, when the time came, we would like to do something similar. Well, now the time has come and our shop is open! We hope that we can provide our customers with unique and quality products from around the world.
Our Vision
It is important to us that we know where our products come from, and that we sell items that directly benefit the individuals and communities that create them. We have many American made handcrafts from area artisans that include: soap, hand creams, candles, copper and iron products, purses, jewelry, pottery, wood crafts... and much more. We continuously search for new products from skilled craftsman and artists to add to our shop.
Our other products are currently being purchased from Ten Thousand Villages, a Greater Gift, and Marketplace which are all non-profit fair-trade importers. By not being focused on massive profits like many importers and retailers, these organizations ensure that the individuals who produce these products are fairly compensated. In many instances these communities are helped with infrastructure, marketing, health and child care, and other important services which are not readily available.
